My subject for Belarus is Anastasia Zhdanovic, who works in environmental engagement directing both the private and public sector towards environmental projects

Geography

Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Minsk is the capital and largest city.

Environmental issues

The primary environmental concerns in Belarus are industrial pollution, the residual effect from the contamination after the 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine, 16 km south of the Belarusian border, and multiple threats to its vast forest area

About Anastasia

Growing up in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster meant that from an early age Anastasia had a raised level of environmental awareness.

After studying law Anastasia went on to join the world of environmental engagement. Through her work in organisations such as the Belarusian Environmental Movement and Global Environmental Facility Anastasia has spent the last 10 years getting both the private and public sector involved in environmental projects on a national and international scale. These have included new ways to dispose of hazardous industrial chemicals, reducing pollution in the national parks and most recently a large scale tree planting project through her organisation The Tree Planted Platform. More than 1.2 million trees have been planted to counteract the devastating effect of the bark beetle on Belarus’s forests
