The Project
I am James Nickells, a British portrait artist specialising in emotional portaiture painted in ink.
Over the next 5 years I will paint 193 portraits.
The subjects for each portrait will each be in a different country. I will be using the United Nations Sovereign States list as the reference for the countries selected.
The sitter will be selected based on them having a positive story of how they have made an impact on an environmental issue. Some stories will be about individual change. Some will be about improving an environmental problem in their communities.
The painting process will be filmed in time lapse and each country’s portrait will be posted on YouTube with their story narrated over the video. The story and links to the time lapse painting video will be displayed here on this website , Twitter and Instagram.
At the end of the project the 193 portraits will form a touring exhibition with the aim of showing that environmental work is occurring in every country and we can all take action.
My mission is to:
Create a sense of global connectivity
Raise funds for community organisations by promoting their donation pages
Heighten awareness of environmental problems and solutions
Promote the understanding that we are all in the climate crisis together and can all contribute to the solutions
