Cuba

The subject for my portrait for Cuba is Alicia Castell, veterinarian and carer for a community of feral cats

Geography

Cuba is an island country, comprising the island of Cuba, Isla de la Juventud, archipelagos, 4,195 islands and cays surrounding the main island. Cuba is located where the northern Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Ocean meet. Cuba is located east of the Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), south of both the American state of Florida and the Bahamas, west of Hispaniola (Haiti/Dominican Republic), and north of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Environmental issues

Owing to its unique geographical location, size and shape, the island nation of Cuba is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Cuba also has significant problems with both air and water pollution, deforestation and biodiversity loss

About Alicia

When Alicia moved in to her current residence 9 years ago, there were very few cats in the neighbourhood. One day a feral kitten appeared near her house. She fed it. It returned. After a few days other feral cats followed and were fighting over the food. It was then that Alicia decided to care for this population.

Using her money and compassion she provides food and care for the cat community and with her veterinarian expertise, helps to keep them healthy and at a stable population. There is a lot more of Alicia’s story in the YouTube video below
