Australia

My subject in Australia is Clare Press, author, activist and host of The Wardrobe Crisis Podcast where Clare aims to empower people to make positive, ethical, sustainable choices about fashion

Geography

Australia is the largest country in Oceania and the sixth largest in the world comprising mainland Australia, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. The Eastern seabord is densely populated whilst the vast desert centre is very sparsely inhabited. It is a megadiverse country, and its size gives it a wide variety of landscapes and climates, with deserts in the centre, tropical rainforests in the north-east, and mountain ranges in the south-east.

Environmental issues

The primary environmental concerns in Australia are climate change , the introduction of invasive species, deforestation, pollution, over fishing and expansion of coastal metroploitan centres

About Clare

Clare started her adult working life as a fashion journalist, spending time at a number of publications and a short period in retail. Her world was changed in 2013 reflecting on the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh in which 1138 people lose their lives. Clare remembers watching the news as the death toll climbed and realising that, as a fashion journalist, she was part of the broken, unethical system that resulted in this happening. She knew she had to make a change, and start using her voice to advocate for a different kind of fashion industry.

She decided to write a book, “Wardrobe Crisis, How We Went from Sunday Best to Fast Fashion”, which has led to her main current role driving The Wardrobe Crisis Podcast in which she discusses and presents many different aspects of global fashion and explores the ethical and environmental stories behind them
