North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia. It constitutes the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and borders China and Russia to the north, and South Korea to the south at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The country's western border is formed by the Yellow Sea, while its eastern border is defined by the Sea of Japan. North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the sole legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands.

Environmental issues

Reading about North Korea’s environmental issues produced a wide range of opinion and trying to unpick what is fact has been fascinating. It is widely reported that during economic hard times in the 1990s much of the infrastructure collapsed and the largely forested mountainous countryside that makes up a lot of the country suffered massive deforestation. This led to flooding, landslides and soil erosion. Along with air and water pollution, North Korea has faced significant environmental challenges. How the country has responded to these challenges is not entirely clear with polarised views expressed by state run agencies such as the Pyongyang Times and eye witness reports from North Korean defectors
